CHAPTER TEXT

Prologue
The year 2035 became the point where events converged that would change the entire world.
In that year, neurotechnologist Anna Rivers and nanoengineer Jack Miller, previously unconnected, began working together on a project involving nanites by a twist of circumstance. The goals of the project were noble — treatment, restoration of the human body, and expanding the possibilities of interaction between people and their environment.
The development progressed rapidly. So rapidly that at a certain point, control over it was lost.
One of the first consequences was the infection of Anna’s and Jack’s children — Sam and Diana — with nanites. This made them not only carriers, but also key subjects for the дальнейшего развития и стабилизации системы, although at that moment it was not given importance.
Later, the project was named «Symphony».
On the day planned to celebrate the success of the development, Anna with her son and Jack with his daughter found themselves at the epicenter of an incident caused by an attempt to steal the project’s source code. The situation became critical. In response, the nanites activated a protection protocol, placing Sam and Diana into stasis and forming cocoons around them.
This moment became the point of no return.
The nanites went out of control and began to spread rapidly. Animals became infected through water. Humans — through contact with the infected and through intense emotional states, which became triggers for activating the nanonet.
Some people possessed high compatibility with the system, and it was in them that the most dangerous changes appeared.
Tissue regeneration spiraled out of control — wounded individuals nearby could literally fuse together. The nanites did not recognize the boundaries of bodies and attempted to «fix» everything at once.
The environment also ceased to obey familiar laws. People unconsciously influenced air humidity, caused electrical discharges, electrolyzing the environment around them, resulting in electric shocks to those nearby.
In some cases, nanite clusters began to разрушать и преобразовывать вещества, leading to spontaneous combustion — people ignited, and even the air caught fire.
The world descended into chaos.
Cities fell one after another. States ceased to exist.
Overloaded by the number of hosts, the nanonet attempted to stabilize itself. The solution was purification — disabling human subjects that interfered with the system’s operation.
However, when the protection protocol was initiated, two original subjects were detected — Sam and Diana. This caused a critical error and led to the cancellation of the process.
The failure proved catastrophic.
People lost their memory. They forgot who they were, how to speak, how to read. Only basic instincts remained — to eat, to drink, to survive.
Civilization ceased to exist.
Cities became zones of infection. Nanites concentrated within them, along with mutated animals drawn by the high density of energy and system activity.
The world changed.

LOCATION

Ashwater, Washington

Ashwater stood in the northwest of Washington State, where the cold waters of the bay cut between wooded mountains and rocky islands. The city was surrounded by coniferous forests, misty passes, and a network of bridges connecting the shores, districts, and research complexes.

Before the Catastrophe, this place was considered a quiet, almost isolated scientific center: far enough from major metropolises, yet developed enough to attract corporations, laboratories, and classified government projects. Here, nature and technology coexisted — glass towers rose above old port districts, roads led into the mountains, and in the mornings, the city often disappeared in thick white fog.

Centuries later, people would no longer remember its true name. They would call these lands differently — Udgallu.
